The materials used in induction furnaces for melting include scrap steel, pig iron, small pieces of scrap castings, billets, and recycled materials.
Scrap steel
Induction furnace charging: Iron scrap is typically categorized into machined‑cutting scrap, construction‑demolition scrap, and packaged waste. When procuring these materials, it is advisable to ascertain their composition and obtain written certification of material content. Machined iron scrap generally consists of waste generated during processes such as punching and sawing; because it is sorted at the point of generation, its chemical composition is well defined and consistent. However, it often contains residual lubricants.
Pig iron
Induction furnace charging: Unlike in the case of nonferrous metals, under special metallurgical conditions, pig iron serves only as the primary iron source for the initial melt; the proportion of pig iron in electric‑arc furnace charge is typically low and has been steadily declining since the 1980s. Exceptions can be found when producing ferritic ductile iron or thick‑walled NCI castings.
