Medium-frequency electric furnace
Monthly comprehensive inspections of medium-frequency induction furnaces:
1. Remove any accumulated dust from the cabinet. The best method is to use an industrial vacuum equipped with a small brush attachment to extract dust from the corners, taking care not to dislodge control wiring or damage components.
2. Wipe clean all the blade contacts of the electric stove’s isolator switch, and inspect for burrs or pitting that could cause arcing.
3. Use a high-quality branded electrical grease to lubricate the selector switch of the electric furnace.
4. Inspect all cable and busbar connections for looseness, overheating, or discoloration, with particular attention to circuit breaker terminals.
5. Inspect the capacitor contactor (at its mounting location) to ensure proper closing and adequate pressure. The presence of pitting or burn marks indicates a weak electromagnetic coil, while intermittent operation suggests that the stainless‑steel spring securing the moving contacts has weakened. Light sanding of the contact surfaces can remove minor pits and burrs; however, contacts with deep pitting or severe scorching should be replaced. Replace any springs that have lost their elasticity with identical stainless‑steel springs. When reassembling the contactor, adjust it so that, when the contacts are manually closed, the air gap between the armature and its sealing element measures between 1/8 inch (0.3 cm) and 3/16 inch (0.5 cm). Verify that the copper‑plated terminals are correctly positioned on the electromagnetic coil.
6. Inspect all pipe joints for signs of leakage. Tighten connections, fittings, or hose clamps as necessary. If water continues to drip, you may need to add additional hose clamps. Use only all-stainless-steel hose clamps, including those for the turbine.
7. Check the continuity of components within the internal or “deionized” water system. The experimental procedure is described in Section 9-4.
8. Check all control wiring connections for looseness.
9. Inspect the overall condition of the electric furnace. Examine the furnace’s cables to ensure they can move freely without excessive friction or wear.
10. Maintenance personnel shall conduct a routine inspection of the operating unit at least once per month.
11. Before returning the equipment to service, verify that the door interlock is functioning properly. When the cabinet door is open, the circuit breaker must remain off.
12. Before returning the equipment to operation, ensure that all jumper wires and temporary troubleshooting connections have been removed. Failure to do so may expose operators to hazards and constitute a violation of federal OSHA regulations. All cabinet doors must be securely locked.
