1. Preparation for heating large billets:
Clean the surface of the bar stock to be heated, removing oil, rust, and other impurities.

For heat treatment processes, such as quenching, the bar stock must be rapidly immersed in a cooling medium—typically water or a specialized quenching oil—to quickly cool the surface and form a hardened layer.
After quenching, tempering is usually required to relieve internal stresses and stabilize the microstructure.
